Screenplay Draft 1

Here is the first draft of the screenplay for Scene 1

EXT. RADIO MASTS ON HILL – MORNING

Howling wind bridges THREE moving cloud Shots and into the rest of scene 1. Setting provides peaceful atmosphere which is then broken by an incursion of WHITE NOISE from a Radio Transmission. The Camera then pans down from sky onto a Radio Mast (at Billing Hill). White noise fades away and the Radio Speaker provides a voice-over for setting’s brief exposition.

(WHITE NOISE)...Good Morning, it is Friday the 18th of March 2022, and you are listening to IMPERIUM FM. To start with...

(WHITE NOISE)...Increased Gale-Force Winds so you can expect to see thunder Storms by the early hours of tomorrow morning. We advise you keep...

DISSOLVE – Circular radio dish to circular pool of light

INT. BLACKED OUT HALL WITH SMALL POOL OF LIGHT – Collaborator Character is sat at a desk here, bashing her head on the table rhythmically.

Lacrimosa is fading away, being replaced with a Low Bass Rumble sound effect. Distant intercom voices in the background.

She is sat at a cleared desk with only a lamp on it, alone.

Stream of light comes across the hall to the victim on the floor. A low Angle Medium Long Shot of interrogator one followed by a High Angle Medium Long Shot of the Criminal Collaborator. Interrogator slowly approaches with echoing footsteps. Victim is still bashing head against the table, as if insane.

1.       BLACK AND WHITE security camera shot.

2.       Back to Normal Cam.

Collaborator

(Little laugh) ...Hi.

Interrogator just stares at her trough his sunglasses then looks to the side, where there is a suspended clock at 8:58am (Manual Focus Pull from face to clock when he turns his head)

Interrogator two enters the room and walks up to her, also wearing sunglasses (Echoing footsteps). The two interrogators stand there (one on either side of her – interrogator 1 on her right and two on her left) and she gets up onto her knees and smiles at them.

Collaborator

...Do you think that I could perha...

Interrogator 1

Shut up...we’ll be asking the questions.

You killed your entire team and then went on to demolish the first power station in 10 years...

Collaborator

How were the fireworks from where you were? My head’s still ringing a little bit to be honest.

FLASH BACK – POWER STATIOR – Morning (Camera Shake)

Interrogator 1

Your head will be more when ringing by the time we’re through with you (pulling gun out) I’m not allowed to kill you, yet. But, I don’t think they’ll mind if I shoot you in the leg...

Interrogator 2

By tonight, we will know our Victory is much closer than it ever has been before.

CLOCK SHOT – 8:59am

Interrogator 1

I don’t know about that. She’s just a collaborator to the Real threat...We need to get information out of her which will probably take days. It’s a good thing we caught her when we did.

BLACK AND WHITE ES security camera, goes static and black.

Back to Normal Cam.

Interrogator 2

I wasn’t talking to you...

Interrogator 1 looks to no.2 and is shocked to see Interrogator 2 pointing a gun at him.

Collaborator

You wanted information, Mr?

CLOCK SHOT – 9:00am

Interrogator 2 shoots no. 1 and kills him.

Collaborator

The security cameras...have you dealt with them?

Interrogator 2

Yes, now let’s get out of here. It’s 9 o’clock, the power will be cut, the facility will go on Red Alert, and we will have our opportunity to escape.

The collaborator stands up.

CUT TO

Interrogation light goes out.

Corridor - all lights go out.

Staircase - tilt down, all lights go out.

Corner of Building, with clouds passing by – Red Alert Ambient Sounds.

Updated Logo Analysis

In my previous post about company logos, I stated that I was not pleased with the fluidity of one of the company names, 'Red-X-Scar'. So I revisited the logo and with my group, decided to create a new logo and company name which seems to flow better.

"Nexus"- This company title seems less clunky and jumbled than 'Red-X-Scar'. The logo is also more equally balanced as, on either side of the extensive 'X' there are an equal number of characters. I think that this logo is simple, but it also is memorable. I prefer it to the 'Red-X-Scar' logo as I also feel the black and white is better than the red and black as it is clearer on the black background, in my opinion.

Research for Interrogation Scene

I hope to include an interrogation scene in this film opening, as I feel that this will capture the audience's attention and cause them to want to know more about the characters in the scene. Interrogation scenes vary from the scenarios in which they take place. A standard interrogation could take place in a room similar to this one:

Interrogation scenarios which take place in rooms like this one are often police interrogations, investigating things such as drug dealing or kidnappings. There is often one interrogator, an officer or detective, and one interrogatee, the criminal or suspect. Sometimes there are other people in the room, for example a scribe who takes down what is said during the interrogation, to allow any evidence to be analysed later. There may also be a guard or second detective, to protect the interrogator from the suspect, if they are thought to be dangerous.

In some situations, there is also an observation mirror, in which other police officers can watch the interrogation through a window, however in the interrogation room, there is simply a mirror.

The lighting of interrogation scenes can be really bright, allowing the audience to see everything, also creating an intimidating feel to the scene, as if there's nothing to hide. An example of this is in "The Dark Knight", which is lit brightly.

However, some more unusual interrogation scenes have the interrogator/s in shadow, and the suspect/interrogatee in clear light. This creates a feeling of inferiority on the suspect, as well as a sense of threat.

These interrogation scenarios are usually associated with more secret business, for example espionage or governmental crimes. An example of this sort of lighting in a secretive interrogation is in the Pixar Short "Jack-Jack Attack", when a character who has experienced a secret hidden from the public is interrogated to find out just how much she knows.

The opening setting for my film will portray a totalitarian state, in which there are enemies who are fighting against the dictatorship. I will use shadows to create a feeling of inferiority towards the suspected terrorist, as this will tell to the audience of the nature of the interrogation; that this is not a standard police interrogation and there is a greater meaning to the scenario.

Own Company Title Logos

Here are the logos which we will be using in the opening titles to our film opening.

"Midnight Pictures" - This logo is a black and white circle, with one half black and the other half white. Inside the circle is a large 'clubs' symbol (♣) which contrasts with the halves of the circle as the half of the ♣ in the black half of the circle is white, and the other half of the ♣ in the white half of the circle is black. Inside the ♣, there is a small 'spades' symbol (♠). Like the ♣, the ♠ is spilit into 2 halves and the halves of the ♠ contrast with the halves of the ♣. The circle is encased in a dark/royal blue ring with the words "Midnight Pictures" featured above and below the icon. The circle has a faint white glow around it, making the words "A Titan-Mind Company" visible. This logo is like the Warner Bros logo in the fact that it has the name of the conglomerate to which it belongs below the main logo. (WB being a part of the 'Time-Warner' Conglomerate)

"Red-X-Scar" - This logo is red text with the 'X' extending faintly from the centre of the image. I like how this image looks as it uses part of the text as an image. This is similar to the Dreamworks logo which uses the boy on the moon as part of the text. However, I feel this company name is not memorable and it doesn't flow well.

"Fallout Films" - This logo is shaped like part of a film reel, indicating that the company is involved in film-making. The simple black and white colour scheme doesn't distract from the logo. The soft glow around the logo makes it appear bright, as if there were light coming from inside the logo. This logo reminds me of the "New Line Cinema" logo, with the association with film reels. I like this design because it is simple and memorable.

Company Title Logo Research

In this post I am analysing industry title logos, which appear before the opening credits of a film.

This logo is from Warner Bros

I have chosen to look at this logo as it is very characteristic and can easily be recognised as the logo of the company. The shield with WB is always associated with the company and this is the sort of effect that we want our company logo to have on our audience.

This logo is from New Line Cinema

I have chosen to look at this logo as it clearly shows that it is a film company with the recognisable edges of a reel of film. This logo is simple, yet effective. It gets the message across what this company is, which is what we want our logos to do.

This logo is from DreamWorks

I chose to research this logo animation because I like how the letter D forms a part of the logo, as the moon. This helps to consolidate the connection we make between seeing the image of the boy fishing on the moon, and the name of the company, 'DreamWorks'.

Analysis of the Opening Titles to Casino Royale

This is the opening title sequence to the James Bond film, Casino Royale.

I have chosen to look at this title sequence because the genre which we have decided on is an espionage sort of film, and James Bond is perhaps one of the most famous examples of spies.

I chose to look at Casino Royale's opening title sequence as I think it is a creative use of the theme which the film embraces- Gambling.

The opening begins with a circular frame of a figure who shoots towards the camera. This shot is typical of Bond films, and fans would immediately recognise the character to be Bond.

This artistic opening is too complex for me to base my opening titles on in the time that I have, however it is interesting to see how opening credits can tell a story with the way they are presented.
